The rainbow smelt is one of the primary food sources for coldwater salmon and
trout. While these baitfish represent
one specie they can look quite different from lake
to lake. The transparent smelt shown here
was netted and photographed at night. The close
up, photographed under light, appears transparent but the pictures below
show they are silvery and reflective.
